Translation Ethics and Social Justice Lecture - Speaking for Others-Power, Harm, and Responsibility in Community Interpreting
Public lecture "Speaking for Others: Power, Harm, and Responsibility in Community Interpreting" by Dr. Aída Martínez-Gómez of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. Reception begins in the Kane Forum (Leahy 235) at 4:30 PM with the lecture to follow at 5:00 PM. Brought to campus as part of the Department of World Language and Cultures' Translation Ethics & Social Justice Lecture Series, made possible by an Ethics Across the Curriculum Initiative Grant. Interpreters mediate access to healthcare and justice, not merely words. This online lecture, open to all, follows power through the interpreted encounter: how it sits between provider and user, who is allowed to interpret, and how their actions can preserve or disturb this power. At stake is the question the profession has not settled yet: what does responsibility look like when you speak for others?Dr. Martínez-Gómez is Associate Professor of Translation and Interpreting at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). Her research focuses on language access in prison settings, non-professional interpreting and child language brokering, and interpreting pedagogy for heritage learners. Certified as a legal interpreter and translator by the New York State courts and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she has worked across correctional, government, and international legal settings, and collaborate pro-bono with legal service non-profits as an interpreter and trainer.
